Description
A Jacob’s coat – Southern style. This design brings back memories of my grandma’s scrap bag and many hours of contentment. Think of all the small pieces you have in your own scrap bag and the fun of piecing together an assortment of soft wools, a bright collection of favorite cottons, or interesting textures of rayon and silk.  I give you VERY EASY instructions to strip piece together fabrics to make a large piece of material big enough to cut out this jacket. When you are done, it is going to look like you did a lot of work you really didn’t do.  Then, the next time you make the jacket, use only one fabric and you will get a completely different look. The jacket is long in back and shorter in front. It has a tuck at the collar near the shoulders allowing a little extra ease across the chest. It also has a pleat in center back for extra movement.  The sleeves and body are cut in one piece insuring quick sewing. The jacket is finished with a flat collar band.

Audubon Park - Pattern #14

Sizing
Because there are no set-in sleeves, this pattern is very easy to size.  All you do is move the side seams cutting lines in or out as needed. The hem is shortened or lengthened at the hem.  Check jacket length (front and back) and adjust up or down (front or back) as needed for your personal shape. Some

ladies may need to lengthen the front (you will want hem to end just below your tummy) and if you are not real tall, you will want to shorten the back a little. Good visual balance is important for a garment to be attractive.  The sleeves can be cut short if desired.  This is a very good design for larger ladies, as well as a small lady.  The secret is choosing a length that is good for your figure and adjusting the amount of ease so it is comfortable on your figure.

Fabric Suggestions
Choose fabric that has a soft to medium drape. This could be soft cotton, washed linen, light wool, rayon or poly blends.  Don’t pick something with a loose unstable weave. The garment has too much weight for that kind of weave and will stretch out of shape.  I have used velveteen (very dressy), light suiting wool, tight cotton T-shirt knit (add block printing for fun), and rayons.  I have also combined several different fibers and fabric waves in one jacket. ALWAYS PRE-WASH FABRICS BEFORE SEWING – especially when combining several different kinds in one garment. When combining fabrics for the strip piecing option pick fabrics that are related in weight and movement. They can be different fibers but they do need to be compatible.  If they aren’t, the jacket will not hang evenly.  You really do have a lot of choices, so be creative and have fun.
