Description
When someone mentions “sarongs” (if you are old enough) you may think of Dorothy Lamour and the South Seas. If you are younger, you will probably think of summer vacation and the beach. The definition of sarong is a style of garment that is wrapped around the body and tied or tucked to hold in place. It is also described as being comfortable and casual.  PARK BENCH PATTERN CO. adds a whole new paragraph to the definition of “sarong”.  Now you can have sarong pants. Still comfortable, but now they are also much more.  These are roomy pants with elastic in back to give more of a skirt appearance.

Diamond Head Park - Pattern #3

The back legs and the left front leg are regular wide pant legs. The right front leg is a double width and folds over itself and ties on the left side and creates a skirt appearance but without the opening a skirt would have. To eliminate the typical “shifting” that usually happens when wearing sarongs, this design is engineered so the left tie is sewn to the inside of the pants in the right side seam, through an inside loop and then out a left side opening.  By doing this, when pants are tied, they will not shift and move when worn.  This creates hassle free wearing. They can be cut anywhere from full length to above the knee.  There is no zipper. Only a hook and eye and a little back elastic.  This is a perfect pattern for casual wear – summer vacations, picnics, or just hanging around the house. In hot and humid weather, this soft roomy design made from cotton is cooler than something more close fitted.  I personally like to make them cropped somewhere between the knee and ankle creating more of a skirt look. This is a wonderful length for work or travel.  If you are a teacher, do take a look at these.  For something very chic and with an uptown look, make them out of crepe and wear a suit jacket.  For evening, cut them long out of soft silk that has a lot of weight and add a short beaded vest or long soft jacket.

Sizing
Sizing adjustments are done in the seams.  Crotch length is raised at the waist. The pattern gives measurements of the pattern and you move side seams in or out as needed.   They size larger just as easy as sizing smaller.  Final fitting adjustments are made before side seams are sewn so you know you are getting a comfortable fit before side seams are sewn and finishing is completed. They are designed to have a soft drape over the tummy.  It really is a nice design for most figures regardless of your size.

Fabric Suggestions
I recommend soft to medium weight fabric with a tight weave suitable for pants.  It could be any fiber type as long as it is not stiff and when tied will not create a large bulky knot at the side waist. Knits are not recommended.
